Clinics

Cornea Clinic

The Proctor Cornea Clinic is reserved for patients with corneal and external eye disease in which there are particularly complicated issues relating to their diagnosis and/or treatment. Patients are seen by about 8 specialists who then discuss the case in detail and get back to the referring physician. Patients who are interested in obtaining the opinion of multiple specialists in a single sitting are also sometimes seen in this clinic. Patients should plan on spending about 3 - 4 hours if they are to be seen in this Clinic.

PROSE Clinic at UCSF

On May 7th, 2012, The F. I. Proctor Foundation is opening its doors to become one of ten PROSE providers. Developed by the Boston Foundation for Sight, prosthetic replacement of the ocular surface ecosystem (PROSE) is a pioneering treatment for patients with complex corneal disease. PROSE restores vision, supports healing, reduces symptoms and improves quality of life for using FDA-approved customdesigned and fabricated prosthetic devices to support or replace impaired ocular surface system functions that protect and enable vision. The PROSE Clinic at UCSF will be the only the second provider in the western United States.

Patients with conditions such as dry eye syndrome, keratoconus, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, chronic ocular graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), Sjögren's syndrome, pellucid marginal degeneration, ocular trauma, complications of LASIK, or complications of cornea transplantation, can benefit from PROSE as it can reduce eye pain that patients experience with corneal disease.

PROSE are transparent domes, about the size of a nickel, made of gas-permeable plastic that allows oxygen to reach the ocular surface. PROSE Devices fit under the eyelids and rest on the sclera (the relatively insensitive white tissue) of the eye, vaulting the damaged cornea and creating a new smooth optical surface that protects the eye from the environment and blink trauma. The devices used in PROSE are filled with sterile saline at the time of insertion, creating a reservoir of fluidthat continuously bathes the ocular surface with oxygenated artificial tears. PROSE doctors design and fit devices to each patient's unique eye shape and to meet specific treatment goals.

The PROSE Clinic at UCSF welcomes Nancy M. Lee, OD. Dr. Lee will begin seeing prospective PROSE patients on May 7, 2012.

Uveitis Clinic

The Ocular Inflammatory Disease and Uveitis Clinic provides consultation and direct care to patients with infectious and immunologic diseases of the eye and the area around the eye. The clinic is the primary referral resource for ophthalmologists, internists and rheumatologists in the northern California area and beyond.

proctor building

The mission of the clinic is to determine the cause of inflammatory diseases and to meet the challenge of treating conditions unresponsive to the usual anti-inflammatory treatments. The clinic's experienced clinicians with access to the state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic measures strive to improve outcomes and reduce complications from the inflammation and its treatment.

The clinic is at the leading edge of applying new treatments to reduce ocular inflammation and restore vision. In particular, a variety of non-steroidal medications are used including immunosuppressive and biologic agents to avoid the serious complications of steroids.

The clinic is staffed with Drs. Acharya, Margolis and Ira Wong who are assisted by post-doctoral fellowship ophthalmologists.
