Research Interests - INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

As the primary ophthalmologist in the SICCA (Sjögren’s International Collaborative Clinical Alliance) Study, Dr. Whitcher has spent the past three years developing and standardizing protocols and calibrating ocular examinations at the lead center at UCSF with the four collaborating centers in Japan, China, Argentina, and Denmark.  Two more SICCA collaborating centers in London, England and in Madurai, India are being added to the study.  His second focus of research is the epidemiology and prevention of corneal ulcers in developing countries.  As a W.H.O. consultant he designed the protocols and helped implement three corneal ulcer prevention studies in the South East Asia Region in Bhutan, Myanmar, and South India. A second corneal prevention study is now taking place in South India. In addition, Dr. Whitcher continues to work as a co-principle investigator on two projects with Dr. Tom Lietman: the Ethiopia Trachoma Project in the Guraghe Zone and in the North Amhara Region of that country, and the SCUT (Steroids for Corneal Ulcer Treatment) Study in Madurai, India.
